Why Time Management is Bull Sh…. 🤔

In busy times time management has become a normal expression. I know many of us struggle with time management problems. However, can we manage time? Nope, 24 hours will be 24 hours no matter what we do. However, let’s have a look what I found in Wikipedia about time management:

Can you manage time……?

24 hours are 24 hours - never more - never less!

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity….

Time management may be aided by a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects, and goals complying with a due date. Initially, time management referred to just business or work activities, but eventually, the term broadened to include personal activities as well. A time management system is a designed combination of processes, tools, techniques, and methods. Time management is usually a necessity in any project management as it determines the project completion time and scope.”

Like in the above Wiki description, time management is often considered a crucial aspect of productivity. However, it could be argued that the concept itself is flawed. Can you really manage time? Everybody has 24 hours no matter how good they manage their time. Time is a finite source, like I said 24 hours. Time is constantly passing and we are unable to speed it up or slow it down. Trying to get more out of your 24 hours will lead to stress, as it is impossible. But what could you do instead?

Manage your Tasks

Instead, you can manage your tasks that you wish or need to complete within a given period or deadline. Don’t manage your time! Look at your tasks and your own behavior, so that you can make the best use of the time you have available.

For example, you have a project with a deadline in a week. You can’t simply “manage” the time you have available and left. Check, what you could do to prioritize the tasks that you need to complete, estimate how much time each task will take, and allocate your time accordingly. Break down your project into milestones and then smaller tasks. Than bring your tasks in a logical order. This way will make you more productive and efficient with the time you have.

Acknowlege Your Personal Life

Another issue with time management is that you might just focus on productivity, without taking into account the other important aspects of your life. Relationships, self-care, and personal growth are also very important for your well being. Well being is important for your productivity. If you neglect your personal areas of your life your productivity might slow down or even worse you will run into a burnout.

Time management may be a popular buzzword. It’s very important to acknowledge your personell necessities, that you can’t manage time itself. So instead of trying to control time, remember only 24 hours are available for everybody. Focus on managing your behaviors and reorganize your tasks.
